About Me

Why did I set this website up?

Hi, You  can call me G. I've been looking into the solo mother by choice (SMBC) route  since 2022.

I've been doing lots of research to understand this choice  better, how it would work, and understanding other solo mum experiences.

So far, I've found there is a  LOT of really useful information available, especially online, but it was scattered everywhere. Across different websites, books, and podcasts.

So I started  documenting what I've found and sharing here online to help others that are also  thinking about becoming solo mothers by choice.

I hope this info hub will also  be useful to friends, family, colleagues and strangers who would like to  learn more about solo mothers by choice.

PS: In no way am I trying to persuade anyone to 'pick sides' when it comes to the SMBC journey. I  simply want to put all the information I've found in one place, while trying  to be as objective as possible. I do sometimes share my key takeaways from the  resources I have used. You may look at the resources I found, and have your own key learnings different to mine.

PPS: While the focus is mainly  on solo mothers by choice, I hope it is useful for any potential solo parent  by choice who do not identify as a woman.

Ok, enough from me, bye!

Who is the website for?

Those  deciding whether to  be a solo mum by  choice, or have already decided.

Why use 'solo' vs 'single' mums by choice?

The terms  are often used interchangeably.    It was quite hard to think  about the most appropriate name for this website.

'Single' mum felt like it focussed too much on the relationship status of the mum. And I felt didn’t capture mums by choice who bring new life into the world, but may have a relationship where the partner is not the social parent (caregiver) for the child. And would include mums who had split from their partner after they had a child together.

'Solo' mum felt more appropriate, to capture solo mums by choice who are having children 'on their own' from the get-go without any other person named on the birth certificate, taking full social and legal responsibility of the child. Although a lot of solo mums are actually raising the child with a village ("it takes a village").
